Learn the flags

Ahoy there!

Last month I visited a naval base in Western Honshu (Japan). By "visit", I mean took a perfectly legal boat cruise around the habour and took photos that nobody arrested me for.

Anyway, in a nearby museum, I bought a souvenir towel with international maritime signal flags and, being weird, thought I'd like to make something in Excel to help remember them.

So I did. And here it is.

Learn mode (Sequential order)

Guess mode (Random order)

I even supplied the answers!

A note about Guess mode. Clicking the picture sets a timer that will show the answer (Slow = 4 seconds, Fast = 2 seconds) before showing the next picture to guess.

Here's the download link.

(I do realize there are other flags used, I'm just including the basic ones for now. And if you wish to change the answers to show different terminology, just change the ControlTipText of the controls on the ufAllFlags userform)

I'll be making variants of this, and other addins, in the near future.

See you next time.

  1. I don't think it's weird to do this in Excel, not at all. But a souvenir towel? That's odd :).

I like "Stop carrying out your intentions and watch for my signals." Maybe I'll have one of those made for around the house.

Nice use of images and tags. I did something somewhat similar once, and stored all the images on the same form beyond the visible area. If you did it inside a frame I think you could still use similar controls.count logic. Not that it's a better way to go, just different.

Thanks for adding me to your Links!

    1. I would have bought the mug but I already have one (thermos mug - keeps my coffee hot :-) )

I like your your choice of flag. I could have used one teaching kids. Maybe I'd have less grey hairs.

Hiding the images is a good idea. I'm thinking of making a DIY version, won't say too much for now.

You're welcome about the link ;-)
